Monument

The term monument is a generic term that includes architectural monuments (all buildings), movable monuments (e.g. sculptures, crosses, etc.) and ground monuments (objects in the ground, e.g. pits, caves, defences, skeletons) as well as garden monuments (e.g. green spaces, gardens, parks, cemeteries).

The task of monument protection and preservation is to protect, maintain, utilise and scientifically research monuments. Monument protection and preservation means any activity that is deliberately aimed at preserving and safeguarding monuments.

Monuments must be entered in the list of monuments in accordance with Section 3 of the NW Monument Protection Act. The determination of whether an object is a monument is based solely on the definitions of the monument terms in the Monument Protection Act (Section 2).

For all measures that are to be carried out on a monument or in the immediate vicinity of a monument, a monument licence in accordance with Section 9 of the Monument Protection Act must be applied for from the Lower Monument Authority of the town of Olsberg before the start of the measure. The lower monument authorities make their decisions in consultation with the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe.

The town of Olsberg can directly support and promote structural measures via the NRW state programme for the promotion of monuments, subject to compliance with the funding conditions.
