Recognition of paternity

If the mother is not married, the father can be entered on the child's birth certificate if paternity has been recognised.
Paternity can be recognised before and after the birth of the child.

In special cases, e.g. if one of the parents is a minor or if the mother is still married, please contact us for advice on the details.

Recognising paternity has no effect on custody rights. The mother remains the sole custodian. If you wish to have joint custody, please contact your local youth welfare office (Hochsauerlandkreis, Steinstr. 27, 59872 Meschede).

Necessary documents

To recognise paternity, the registry office requires the following from both parents

  • Birth certificate or
  • Marriage certificate with annulment note or
  • Marriage certificate and final divorce decree
  • If the child has already been born, also the child's birth certificateand
  • identity card/passport

Recognition of paternity is free of charge.

All original documents are required. Further evidence may be required in individual cases. Both parents must appear in person at the registry office.

In the case of unmarried parents, the child automatically acquires the mother's maiden name after birth. However, the mother with sole custody can give the child his or her name with the father's consent.
