
In Germany, every birth of a child must be registered at the registry office of the place of birth within one week.
As the town of Olsberg does not have a maternity ward in the hospital, most Olsberg babies are born in hospitals in the surrounding area. These registry offices are therefore also responsible for certifying births. If the birth takes place in a hospital, the management of the hospital notifies the registry office of the birth. The legal guardian(s) fill in the notification of birth at the hospital and state the desired first names.
If your child is born at home, the Olsberg registry office is responsible. Here too, it is your duty to report the birth of your newborn child to me within one week of the birth. To do this, you will need a certificate from the midwife or maternity nurse who was present at the birth.
Costs
The birth certificate is free of charge. Certificates are also issued free of charge for
- the employment agency (family benefits office) - to apply for child benefit
- the district administration - to apply for parental allowance
- the health insurance fund - to apply for pregnancy/maternity assistance

Necessary documents
The following documents are required to certify the birth:
Married parents
- Marriage before 01.01.2009: Transcript from the family register
- Marriageafter 1 January 2009: Marriage certificate and birth certificate of both parents or a certified copy from the marriage register
- Marriageabroad: Marriage certificate and birth certificates with recognised translation / international marriage or birth certificates
- Identity card / passport of both parents
Unmarried parents
Unmarried mothers:
- Birth certificate of the mother (if necessary with translation by a recognised translator or international birth certificate)
- Identity card or passport
Divorced mothers:
- Marriage certificate (translation or international certificate, if applicable) with annotation of dissolution
- Divorce decree (translation if necessary or, in the case of EU divorces, the certificate pursuant to Art. 39 on judgements in matrimonial matters of the EC Marriage Regulation)
If paternity has already been recognised:
- Notarised copy of the acknowledgement of paternity and any declaration of custody
- Birth certificate of the father (if necessary with translation by an authorised translator or international birth certificate)
- Father's identity card or passport
