Tax ID

The tax identification number (IDNr) replaces the tax number for income tax purposes. It remains valid for life and does not change when you move house or get married. The IDNr is an eleven-digit number and contains no information about you or the relevant tax office.

You have not yet received your IDNr (at birth or when moving to Germany for the first time) or you can no longer find it?

As a rule, you will also find your ID number on your last income tax assessment notice or your wage tax statement. If you cannot find your IDNr in these documents either, you have the option of requesting your IDNr again using the input form on the Internet portal of the Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt).

Alternatively, you can obtain a certificate of your ID number in person at the Citizens' Service Centre or it will be sent to you by letter. The fee for a retrospective certificate is €3.50.

Please understand that, for data protection reasons, the ID number cannot be communicated to you by e-mail or telephone, but only by letter or in person at the Citizens' Service Centre with a valid ID document.
