Passport / e-Passport

E-passport is the abbreviation for electronic passport, i.e. a passport with a chip.

Personal and biometric data are stored in the e-passport:

Biometrics is the technology of recognising people on the basis of personal characteristics. The biometric features in the e-passport are:

  • Your face (therefore a suitable photograph, not older than 6 months, is required)
  • Your fingerprints, these are stored on the chip (usually the right and left index finger)

Please note: It is not possible to issue a passport without fingerprints!

Special requirements:

  • The applicant must be German.
  • The main municipality of residence is generally responsible for issuing the passport. If the applicant has a secondary residence in Olsberg, authorisation must be obtained from the relevant passport authority (the processing time is longer and the fees are higher).
  • The applicant must be of legal age (otherwise: consent of both parents (see below), identity documents of both parents, proof of custody and presence of one of the custodians, if applicable, when applying for and collecting the passport).
  • If the "applicant" is legally incapacitated, only the person with custody/legal guardianship can submit the application; the "applicant" must still be present in person (e.g. for fingerprints)

Processing deadlines:
The processing times for the e-passport depend on the capacity utilisation of the Federal Printing Office, approx. 8 - 10 weeks, please apply for your passport in good time before you start your journey.
If a passport is needed urgently / earlier, it can be delivered by express delivery for a higher fee. Please enquire about an "express passport" and its delivery times at the Olsberg Citizens' Service Centre.
